Cast Iron Bathtubs
Best known for their antique value, historic beauty, elegance, and appearance cast iron bathtubs started as being troughs for horses in the 19th century, and after in invention of bathtub feet people attached them to the bottom and started using them for bathing. They are a great choice for bathroom remodels and makeovers because they are heavy but can typically cost more than tubs made from other materials because they are scratch resistant, extremely durable and do a great job of keeping bath water hot.
If they are properly maintained they will last a lifetime because they are basically indestructible. Cast iron is extremely strong, which means it is unlikely to break and will last for years with even the most minimal of maintenance. Because they are durable and heavy, which helps minimize vibrations and muffle any noises, they provide a quiet place to retreat for a peaceful bath after a long day.
Because they are fire polished, they have a highly polished smooth and comfortable finish giving them unparalleled beauty. Cast-iron bathtubs with a porcelain finish are probably the most durable in most home situations and the easiest to maintain allowing it to keep its great looks.
Alternatives are available in enamel over steel and most modern bathtubs are made of acrylic or fiberglass and occasionally wood. They can also come with air spa or jetted whirlpool systems which are top sellers having both antique looks and modern features. Acrylic clawfoot tubs are available in the same styles as cast iron clawfoot tubs, but weigh much less and are more economical. Acrylic is resistant to chips and cracks and can be repaired if damaged. Cast iron tubs usually come only in white, while the acrylics can be ordered in a variety of colors.
